Pack a routine, not your whole shelf

Make space for the trip by deciding what each bottle is coming along to do.

By Zee, founder and skincare educator

How do I decide which skincare products to pack?

Short answer: Start with the routine you already understand. List the job of each step, separate essentials from optional extras, and check the product’s storage instructions and your carrier’s current baggage rules before packing.

A real shelf moment

The bag is almost full, but the bathroom shelf still looks like a list of things you might need. Every bottle has become a small what-if. Before choosing a smaller container, choose what is actually coming with you.

Write the routine before filling the bag

My approach to packing starts with purpose. Write the steps you already use and understand. Then put a product beside each one. A smaller bottle is only helpful when it has a reason to be in the bag.

Protect the useful foundation

A simple skincare foundation includes cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection, as the American Academy of Dermatology explains. Packing less does not mean leaving out sun protection or changing a clinician-directed routine. Let your existing needs guide the list.

Give the what-ifs their own list

You can write down an optional product without packing it immediately. Ask what situation would make it useful and whether you already have something for that job. This is a way to make the decision visible, not a rule that everyone must travel with the same number of bottles.

Keep the practical details attached

Read storage directions and check whether the original packaging needs to stay with the product. Make sure you can still identify what you packed. Check current travel rules with your carrier and departure airport; a packing article cannot settle every route or container requirement.

Let the routine support the trip

Whole-person care has to leave room for the rest of life. My aim is a bag you understand and a routine that asks less of your attention. When you come home, the notes you made can help you see which extras were useful and which were simply taking up room.

What to remember tomorrow morning

  • Write the routine before packing
  • Keep product instructions and identity clear
  • Check current rules for your own journey
